Abstract

Local management experiences of the Guarani Aquifer and activities with students in Ribeirão Preto city (São Paulo State) have been performed to face challenges connected to a better understanding of the quality and quantity of water of this mega-reservoir. Ribeirão Preto is a pilot-area for a detailed study of Guarani Aquifer as a function of urban development and intensive agriculture and industrial activities. The overexploitation of groundwater of Guarani Aquifer has conducted a international administration commission to define two lines of action: (a) to promote a local training of different people of local community as the activities on Mathematics “Guarani Aquifer: ecology and water cycle”, at the State School Profª Eugênia Vilhena de Moraes. The result is a practical innovation on changing the school curriculum and (b) to promote local administration and territorial regulations on regard of groundwater, associated with some institutions toward research as well as to enhance knowledge on evaluation of the reserves and on the reservoir characteristics. An example is the prohibition of new drillings for public supply in the center of the city; they are just restricted to replacement of a few old wells.
